After escaping the Nazis in Vienna, legendary psychiatrist Dr. Sigmund Freud invites a young, little known professor, C.S. Lewis to his home in London. Lewis expects to be called on the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, but the dying Freud has a much more significant agenda. MY BERNHARDT SUMMER is a dramatic comedy that takes place in the summer of 1917 when America entered the first World War and Sarah Bernhardt and Isadora Duncan descended on Long Beach, Long Island, for their summer holiday.

Bernhardt, recuperating after having her leg amputated, and Isadora Duncan, flat broke and living at a fisherman’s cottage with her dance troupe, “The Isadorables” capture the imagination of 17 year old Ada Neal, “Nealie”, desperate to escape Long Island to be an “artist” of any kind.

MY BERNHARDT SUMMER captures the legends of Bernhardt and Duncan and the human beings they were built on as Nealie finds her self caught in a tug of war between these two strong willed women with directly opposing views of life and the young man who loves her and proposes before enlisting for the war.

Ultimately, Nealie is forced to face herself and choices that will shape the rest of her life.

MY BERNHARDT SUMMER celebrates the artist in us all. And, as Nealie says in beginning the play, “There is nothing more dangerous than a blank piece of paper.”
